Safety Policy

Vehicle Use Policies

The State of Montana has developed a Vehicle Use Policy which all State and University employees must follow. A copy of the policy is available below.

The Montana University System has also developed a Vehicle Use Policy.

Lab Checkout Procedure

The intent of this policy is to ensure that all hazardous materials used in laboratories and hazardous waste generated by researchers are disposed of properly when a research faculty, staff or student leaves 51社区. If improper management of hazardous materials occurs, the responsible department will be charged for any analytical and/or disposal costs associated with those materials. Any regulatory action or fines resulting from improper management or disposal of hazardous materials will be the responsibility of the generating department.

Safety Programs

Bloodborne Pathogens Program

51社区 has developed a written exposure control plan designed to protect employees from possible infection caused by bloodborne pathogens including, but not limited to, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). Included in the program are all the necessary forms in which one might need:

Fire Protection & Prevention Program

51社区’s Fire Protection and Prevention Plan provides faculty, staff and students with information and guidelines to assist them in recognizing, reporting, and controlling fire hazards on campus.

Electrical Safety Program

The careless handling of electrical equipment starts many fires in labs and other places. Laboratories have stills, waters baths, and other apparatus that can overheat or cause electrical shocks. Minimize electrical safety hazards with the recommendations listed in Electrical Safety Principles.

Fall Protection Program

The intent of 51社区's Fall Protection Program is to minimize the possibility of injury or death from the improper use or lack of use of appropriate fall protection.

Hazard Communication Program

The Hazard Communication Program, also known as the “Employee Right to Know Law,” helps to ensure that employees know what hazardous materials exist on the 51社区 campus, how to safely use these materials, and how to deal with any hazardous material emergency that arises.

Hotwork Program

The Hot Work Program is designed to help minimize the possibility of injury or property damage due to improper management of open flame/high temperature processes.

Lockout/Tagout Program

The 51社区 Lockout/Tagout program is designed to protect 51社区 employees from injury or death from the release of hazardous energy. This program establishes the minimum requirements for isolation of electrical, chemical, thermal, hydraulic, pneumatic, and gravitational energy prior to equipment repair, adjustment or removal.

Personal Protective Equipment Program

The Personal Protective Equipment Program defines the basic elements and responsibilities of the program in order to ensure the safe and appropriate use of personal protective equipment on the 51社区 campuses.

Respiratory Protection Program

51社区's Respiratory Protection Program defines the rules regarding the use of respirators for personal protection at 51社区 as stated in OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134. Strict adherence to the provisions contained in this program is necessary to prevent exposure of 51社区 employees to potentially hazardous airborne contaminants.

Pandemic Plan

In the event of a pandemic, 51社区 will play an integral role in protecting the health and safety of students, faculty, staff, and their families. The Pandemic Plan serves as a guide for our response to a pandemic emergency.

Radiation Safety

51社区 has terminated the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) license; therefore, no radioactive materials may be purchased or brought onto the 51社区 campus.
