Research Interests

  • Integrated treatment of diverse industrial and municipal wastewater streams using phototrophic microalgae and purple bacteria
  • Advancing biofilm and bio-flocculation technologies for efficient dewatering and circular resource recovery
  • Resource recovery from waste streams and generation of value-added biorefinery products, including bioplastics, photopigments, and single-cell protein.
  • Life cycle assessment of environmental processes/products
  • Removal of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) from contaminated water sources

On-going Projects

  • Chemical treatment of coal ash ponds wastewater
  • Bioremediation of coal combustion residue with acidophilic microalgae Galdieria sulphuraria to improve water quality
  • Integration of acid mine drainage treatment and synthesis of aquaculture feed in a biofilm reactor using a mixed culture of purple bacteria
